(6/2015) President's message (Michelle K. Rutledge, PharmD, President )

Greetings!

Michelle K. Rutledge, PharmD, NDPAC's presidentDear Fellow National Diamondback Pharmacists:

Greetings! First, thank you for allowing me to continue to serve as your President. I pledge to continue building on NDPAC’s solid foundation of leadership and rich legacy. Thanks also to our officers and committee chairs their efforts to keep the National Diamondback Pharmacy Alumni Council, (NDPAC), a viable and progressive organization.

My goals for the past year has been the continued support of the mission of the NDPAC. Three focus areas which I believe can help us achieve our goals continue to be: Membership, Creating A Culture of Giving, and the Annual NDPAC Convention.

Membership including focus on FAMU COPPS Relations – The goal is to increase financially ACTIVE membership by reaching out to recent graduates as well as “seasoned” graduates. I believe one way to show the value of NDPAC to students and encourage participation upon graduation is to foster a “connection” as they matriculate through the pharmacy program. This year, Diamondback has been visibly present during Forum, the Clinical Symposium, and during FAMU COPPS graduation activities. In addition, the Student / Alumni Leadership Skills Workshop will continue to be offered, and FAMU Pharmacists will continue to provide experiences by serving as preceptors for P4 students completing their clinical rotations.

Creating A Culture of Giving – As a NDPAC member, giving back to our beloved Alma mater and investing in the future of pharmacy is a gratifying experience: We all have been helped in some way because someone else gave back. That small but important act is the essence of our culture.  We continue to give towards financial support of FAMU COPPS programs and students.  In 2007-08, NDPAC established a $100,000 endowment with the FAMU Foundation for the FAMU College of Pharmacy. A beautiful plaque hangs prominently in the College’s foyer to commemorate the generous donors. Proceeds from that endowment provide perpetual support for the College and student activities. Other examples of Culture of Giving initiatives designed to provide ongoing financial support from alumni participants include:

Automatic Bank Deduction Program; Website Deposits; Direct Mail to NDPAC; Local Chapter Scholarship Programs; Employer Matching Contribution to NDPAC

We will continue to increase awareness about these donor initiatives.

Annual NDPAC convention - Lastly, I would like to strongly encourage an increase in our attendance at the annual NDPAC convention. It is a very worthwhile experience and a tax- deductible investment. Obtaining 8 to 10 CE hours in exotic locations among fellow FAMU pharmacy graduates is both a joyous reunion and a priceless social and networking experience! NDPAC conventions are usually held the third weekend in June yearly. This year the convention location will be in beautiful Jacksonville, Florida, June 15-19, 2016. This 46th Annual Convention marks a return to our home state of Florida, and convenient for those who have difficulty with long distance travel. Therefore, we hope for a record attendance of FAMU Pharmacists, students, friends, and faculty! Additionally, we have some exciting convention-affiliated activities planned such as a return of the Diamondback Golf Tournament. So please assemble your foursome and start practicing your golf swing and putting now!

Watch your mail, both e-mail and “snail” mail, and please visit our NDPAC website, www.NationalDPAC.com. Also watch Social Media profiles on Facebook and LinkedIn for new ventures that NDPAC will initiate. This is an exciting time to be a pharmacist, as we take part in evolving roles in our profession, such as medication therapy management (MTM), immunizations, and seeking provider status. Let’s get to work NDPAC, and let us continue to earn the coveted title of Best [HBCU]Pharmacy Alumni Organization!

Go Rattlers! FAMU Forever! #NDPAC
