John J. Scrivens, Jr., R.Ph., Ph.D.

Dr. John J. Scrivens, Jr., is Associate Professor and Director, Tampa Pharmacy Practice Division, Florida A&M University (FAMU) College of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences.  He is a 1972 B.S in Pharmacy degree graduate of the FAMU School of Pharmacy, and 1976 Masters in Pharmacy degree graduate of the University of Florida College of Pharmacy.  He completed a Clinical Pharmacy residency at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Tampa, Florida.  Dr. Scrivens also holds a Ph.D. degree in Public Health from the University of South Florida (1994).

Dr. John J. Scrivens, Jr has been recognized for his outstanding accomplishments in the area of clinical pharmacy practice, and for his research in community health and education.  His contributions to the literature have been in the fields of community based training in rural areas, and prostate cancer research in African American Men.  Dr. Scrivens has been a strong advocate for student experiential training in underserved communities, and he regularly engages his students in the FAMU pharmacy alumni’s long-standing “Close To Your Heart” health education and screening programs.  Dr. Scrivens served as Project Director for the Hillsborough Community College (HCC) to FAMU Bridges to the Pharmaceutical Sciences Program, a National Institutes of Health (NIH)-sponsored program to increase health researchers and practitioners from under-served populations.  He is also project director for the Community Health Centers of Pinellas Pharmacy Services Program housed at the Johnnie Ruth Clarke Community Health Center in St. Petersburg, Florida.  John is the co-founder of the Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA), and founding President and former Executive Director of the Association of Black Health-Systems Pharmacists (ABHP). 

Dr. John J. Scrivens, Jr has been affiliated with the FAMU Pharmacy Alumni Council since shortly after its inception in 1971.  He helped establish the Alumni’s Tampa Bay Chapter, and has served in various offices on both national and local levels, including National President from 1994 to 1996, and 2011 to current.  John is a prolific contributor to the NDPAC, and a Platinum level donor.  He was designated a Distinguished Alumnus by the FAMU College of Pharmacy and inducted into its Gallery of Distinction in 1989.  In 2009, he established the John J. Scrivens, Jr. Award for Community Services for FAMU pharmacy students who excelled in community health education and service. 

Dr. John J. Scrivens, Jr and his wife Molbert Robinson Scrivens are the proud parents of three adult children, including John J. Scrivens, III (Shaunette) of Santa Clara, California, Dr. Jevin E. Scrivens, Sr. (Diane) of Weston, Florida, and Janelle L. Scrivens-Ferguson (Reginald) of Tampa. They are also the proud grandparents of four grandsons.
